Altered Archive Book + Print
In Altered Archive, imaginary archivist extraordinaire Madge Cameron uses play, storytelling and humor to consider where we situate authorship, conservation, and photographic truth today against a backdrop of AI upheaval, social fragmentation, and political censorship of cultural institutions and their collections. Join Cameron for an immersive tour through her archive as it undergoes alterations and absences that oscillate between preservation and loss, analog and digital, material truth and artful fiction.

For the last decade, artist Rachel Phillips has made work under the guise of an alter-ego named Madge Cameron—a dedicated, reclusive archivist at an imaginary photographic archive whose contents are undergoing unexpected alterations and even disappearances. The core of the work is digitally altered vernacular snapshots in which glitchy aberrations pierce the black and white images. See more work from Fixed here.
